Recycling Content
Moving things around can be a handy trick for keeping your site fresh, especially when you don’t have enough new content or you are pressed for time. Some tips:
- Dig up content from the interior of your site and feature a small item about it on the homepage.
- Place less relevant information in sidebars.
- Change the photos.
- Add a related links section.
- Create tables charts or graphs.
For example: If you keep a list of student interviews archived on an interview page and you are featuring news on your homepage about something referenced in one of those interviews, plug in a few sentences and a photo right on the home page with a link back to the older interview.
Here’s an example of how the tangential information can be removed from a block of text and moved off into a sidebar:
- The life of a student can be a little hectic, so the last thing you want to worry about is cooking. Northeastern's Dining Services offers convenience and flexibility, and provides a variety of food choices and meal plans. Resident dining is offered at two primary locations: Levine Marketplace (in Stetson East) and Stetson West. At each location, you'll find an array of foods, ranging from soups and stir fry to pizza and fresh-carved meats. And don’t forget your Husky Card! From your morning coffee to a midnight snack, the Husky Card can get you through the day. It's welcome virtually everywhere around campus, including the campus coffee cafes, the bookstore, the Curry Student Center food court, and the new Cyber Cafe in Snell Library, as well as at many off-campus restaurants and stores.
The important info can be extracted from this wordy block of text above and shortened. The Husky card info can be placed in a sidebar.
