Welcome, Web Writers

As the writer for your department's Web site, you are at the forefront of an evolving medium. As you prepare to become a skilled Web writer, it’s helpful to think of yourself first as a Web audience. Think about how your own use of the Web has evolved. What was once new and unfamiliar about the Web has now, for most of us, become second nature. When we see an underlined word, we know it’s a link. When we see Contact Us, we expect to be connected to an e-mailer. When we see a product for sale, we are fairly certain we can buy it on the spot. Web users have become savvy, so Web writers need to keep pace. Effective Writing for the Web is a quick course designed to teach you the basics of Web writing. Complete the course in a three-hour workshop at the EdTech Center; in an online workshop delivered via Blackboard; or at your own pace, moving through the examples and exercises.

Writing Primer

Writing concisely means no extra words. Web writing guides advise that when it comes to Web copy, less is more. Instead of writing for readers, write for scanners. When you move written copy to the Web, cut the copy in half, then cut it in half again. Bold key words, make lists, and build in links to connect to more information.
